6 Things Not to say to throwers...

6 Things Not to say to throwers Posted on June 24, 2015 Sometimes when you are walking through the bush you may stumble across a snake sunning itself and minding its own business. A good way to get bitten by the poisonous little fella is if you go and annoy it. Throwers can be much the same. Here are a few tips to prevent all the non-throwers out there from getting bitten! 1. You can just eat whatever you want right? You don’t need to diet. Being an elite athlete requires elite nutrition. The things we put into our systems effect how we perform. So the answer to this is “No!” If you look at the top of the tree in throwing world most of us are specimens of athleticism. We are not diabetic, heart attack candidates who have had a lightbulb moment whilst stuffing our faces at our local fast food restaurant and decided we might try and be the worlds best and throwing things. 2. Please don’t drop the weights! The main reason you don’t see us around public gyms is because the general public don’t know how to behave around us. We sweat, yell, listen to loud music and throw loads of weight around. So if you even see us smashing a weights session and you might think its a good idea to ask us to be quiet or “don’t drop the weights” tweet about it instead. You might get a better response because we aint listening! 3. Throwing training is mainly upper body weights right? This is 100% correct. All we do is bench and bicep curls. We don’t need our legs at all when we throw they are just there to hold up our massive torso! You could pretty...

ICEMAN Jul30

ICEMAN

Wim Hof first caught the attention of scientists when he proved he was able to stay submerged in ice for one hour and 53 minutes without his core body temperature changing. Since then, he’s climbed Mount Everest in his shorts, resisted altitude sickness, completed a marathon in the Namibian Desert with no water, and proven—under a laboratory setting—that he’s able to influence his autonomic nervous system and immune system at will. Almost everything Wim has done was previously thought to be impossible, but he’s not a freak of nature; he’s a master of meditation. To demonstrate that any human can learn his methods, Wim offered to teach VICE hosts Matt Shea and Daisy-May Hudson how to climb a freezing cold mountain in their shorts without getting cold. But when Matt and Daisy signed up for the training, they had no idea that the so-called Iceman was planning to lead them on a psychedelic journey across Europe that circled the chasm between science and spirituality.  ...

Dave Castro on … Enhancing Performance...

In this Web exclusive, the director of CrossFit’s Training Department (and the man behind the Games) discusses the use of performance-enhancing drugs in CrossFit. – See more at: http://www.theboxmag.com/article/dave-castro-enhancing-performance-10146#sthash.sDZSYCKv.yshIB3pM.dpuf What is CrossFit doing regarding performance-enhancing drugs? We test a lot. We test everyone who qualifies for the Games from the Regionals. Every athlete at the Games is tested, including the teams, as soon as Regionals are over. And then we have a list of 10 to 20 people who we randomly pick to test throughout the whole year. Rich Froning and Jason Khalipa were on that list and last year they were tested probably 15 times. And it’s completely random. They’re called up or they’re told to be home at a certain time and someone drives out there and tests them. Right now, I don’t think anyone who’s winning is cheating. I guarantee you there are thousands of people who tried to get to the Regionals that are using steroids. Yeah, there are probably people at my skill level who are using steroids to do a little bit better and it doesn’t matter. There are people who are using steroids, trying to get stronger, trying to get an edge, who aren’t even qualifying for the Regionals. And then I imagine there are a few people at Regionals somewhere in the field who are using steroids who we’re not catching, but they’re not the ones qualifying. The ones who are good enough to get there are getting tested and are not using steroids. Are there any of them who are potentially working with companies like BALCO or some of these organizations that have designer drugs and stuff that we’re not able to test for yet? Potentially, but I don’t think we’re there yet. I think...

Stone Cold Stunner On Stage During Graduation Jun16

Stone Cold Stunner On Stage During Graduation...

Graduation ceremonies can be brutal, especially during the summer months in Florida. You’re sweating your ass off in a shirt and tie underneath your oversized gown, listening to an infinite list of names of people that have zero effect on your existence being called until you eventually have the pleasure to go up on stage, shake the hand of the college dean you’ve never met, and receive an empty leather folder. Then you park your ass back into your seat, and the list of irrelevant classmates continues. Occasionally you’ll get some kids who try to spice things up, failing more often than not. These graduates at the University of Miami, however, delivered. “BAW GAWD, STONE COLD STUNNER!” Got to love when someone sticks with the classics. You kids can keep your RKO, I’ll take the Stunner every day of the week. If you couldn’t get down with WWF and the “Attitude Era,” you didn’t have a childhood. Nearly perfect execution by these two, but the guy on the receiving end needs to sell it better. Clean that up and throw in a few beer smashes and this would have been an all-time graduation power move. The dean never saw it coming....

PRIVATE RESERVE SINGLE ESTATE LIGHT ROAST COFFEE...

PRIVATE RESERVE SINGLE ESTATE LIGHT ROAST COFFEE FLAVOR Onnit Colombian Amber is a light roast with mellow acidity and a strong caramel sweetness. It has a medium body with a smooth, complex taste containing citrus notes of orange, grapefruit, and lemongrass, with a very clean finish. SOURCE Introducing Single Estate Light roast coffee made exclusively for Onnit by Caveman Coffee Co. After working closely with the master roasters at Caveman Coffee Co, we are proud to present this first edition private reserve we call Colombian Amber. Finding coffee that’s from a single source is great. Our unblended coffee beans can not only back to their geographic region in Colombia, but the individual farmer and family-operated farm responsible for growing them. In other words, our beans are even better than single source, they’re Single Estate. The beans are hand-picked only when they are ripe, then washed and dried to ensure the highest quality and purity.   OUR PARTNER We partnered with Caveman Coffee to create this signature roast. Our Colombian Amber coffee uses beans that come from a single estate in Columbia. We’re a part of this world and believe in sustainable farming practices, both to respect and protect the environment. Likewise, our coffee is raised and harvested employing ethical labor practices. We are proudly certified by both The Rainforest Alliance andThe UTZ. After being picked and cleaned, our beans are sent to the high altitude and dry climate of New Mexico. With a little help from the “Dean of Beans” Keith Jardine, Caveman’s award-winning Master Roaster perfectly roasts the beans, ensuring they never burn. Each batch is then quickly shipped to provide the freshest product possible.   CONTENTS AND PURITY Caffeine: 1.12% Chlorogenic Acid: 2.34% Purity: This coffee has been tested to be below...

Matt Vincent Road To Victoria Jun02

Matt Vincent Road To Victoria...

Last weekend I got back up to Victoria, British Columbia to compete.  First let me say that this is one of the best games there is.  I love it up there: people, weather, and the city. Victoria is doing a lot of things right and she is a sassy old gal.  Amazing food and beer topped off with a climate I can enjoy both while sitting outside on a patio.  Getting drunk and disgustingly full while outside in cool weather is the best thing ever.  Add to that a solid as fuck group of dudes to share a great time and bunch of laughs with.  All that adds up to two giant thumbs up in my book. The games went great.  Training so far this season has been a struggle.  Having some joint pain, and sometimes I can’t seem to even get around.  Time crunched more than usual. Working hard to keep myself motivated to throw.  I love training and  I love the variety of things I can do while training and staying healthy.  Being involved in a sport like Highland Games places some unique demands on training just like any other sport.  The biggest difference between throwing and other strength sports is that the amount I lift is not important at all. Spending time out in the field is key to throwing well.  You have to get the reps.  Not just reps, but reps with intention.  I am thinking now what am I trying to accomplish this session.  I try to keep one or two goals for the session.  That could be making sure I am finishing throws, drive out of the back, get off my left foot in the stone, and push the right hand in the hammer. Finding the balance and training smart is...

Building a Tiger starts in weight room May21

Building a Tiger starts in weight room...

LSU is known for having one of the country’s top strength and conditioning programs, and the man behind it all is Tommy Moffitt. When Nick Saban arrived in Baton Rouge back in 2000, Moffitt was brought in to lead the Tigers’ charge in the weight room. Moffitt had been part of national championship teams at Miami and Tennessee. He was tasked with helping to turn around a Tiger program that had suffered through eight losing seasons over an 11-year span. Moffitt is entering his 15th season with the Tigers, and over that span he has been a part of the most successful run in school history that includes a pair of national championships. The recipe for success is hard work and dedication during the off-season. “It is a gameday,” LSU coach Les Miles told Chad Sabadie from Fox8 New Orleans. “You walk into that weight room. Don’t walk in there to hang around. Don’t walk in there to hide. You walk in there to compete.” Intense is one of the best ways to describe Moffitt in how he approaches his job, one that he truly loves. “I feel like I have the best job in the world because of how hard and how committed our guys are to working day-to-day,” Moffitt said. “They give us themselves unconditionally, and it’s an amazing thing to watch on a day-to-day basis.” “You know they come here as boys, really,” Moffitt added. “They’re 18, 19, 17-years old, but they all leave as men, and not just physically stronger but mentally and emotionally stronger too, and that’s the most rewarding thing about what I do.” And his players have bought into it in a big way. “He was tough-nosed, he was hard on me, but now to fast forward, we’re pushing each other,” Vadal Alexander said....

A Day in the Life of a Starr...

Nothing is ordinary about a day in the life of Kelly Starrett. Whether he’s helping fine-tune one of the world’s fittest men or running an outdoor-only CrossFit gym in San Francisco, Starrett is one interesting guy with an incredible depth of knowledge about human movement. Starrett’s doctorate in physical therapy lends him credibility, but it’s his deep background in training that keeps people returning to his gym and attending his Mobility and Recovery Certifications. Starrett, a charismatic speaker and energetic motivator, is also a regular contributor to the CrossFit Journal, where he helps athletes and trainers alike prevent injuries and improve performance. Recently, Sevan Matossian spent some time with the amiable Starrett and came away with an interesting view into his life, including a behind-the-scenes look at Kelly’s struggle with addiction: “I think that if you replaced two-thirds of your blood plasma with coffee, it would challenge your liver in ways that would only make you...

Beer and Rocks with Matt Vincent...

Matt Vincent is one of the most interesting humans I’ve had the privilege of meeting.  He is a 2x Highland Games World Champion, which basically means he’s the best in the world at throwing a bunch of heavy shit. One of the biggest takeaways for me out of this interview was the emphasis on staying healthy for his actual sport-throwing.  He repeatedly emphasized the fact that the training in the gym is only a small part of his overall training.  It is only there to support his technical work with throwing. With that said, he shares how he breaks down the year, what exercises he uses, how he recovers and prevents injury etc. He also goes into how he lost 30+ lbs. of fat and is still hitting PRs in the gym and on the field. When he’s not power snatching 330lbs or out training in the field, he enjoys a wide variety of art, craft beer, and even paints his toe-nails. This dude’s perspective on life is absolutely inspiring to me.  On one hand, he is in constant pursuit of excellence in the form of Highland Games’ competition.  On the flip-side, he has a great ability to balance that with time spent just having fun and enjoying his life.  I hope you enjoy the show....
